Ms. Erspamer sent me a new video as a follow-up to the Cup Song. Here are some modifications you can do to make it harder, or to play with more than one person. Let me know if you tried it and if it worked!

Hi 5th graders! If you were at Thurston in 1st grade and have a REALLY good memory, you might remember one of my student teachers from that year, Ms. Erspamer. She is now a music teacher at Auburn Elementary in Auburn Hills and has also been making videos for her students. I thought you'd enjoy this one. It teaches you how to do the cup part to the Cup Song. Here is a Music BINGO game created by my friend Jennifer Bailey, another music teacher in Michigan. See how many of these things you can do while at home. Hint: Some of these items can be found on the Videos page right here on Ms. Rothfeld's music website.
Steven Jarvis, the conductor for the Ann Arbor Symphony's Link Up performance came to work with the 5th grade choir on Tuesday, February 25. We all had a great time preparing for our upcoming performance with the A2SO. We'll be performing for almost 3,000 students in March!
The 5th Grade Choir amazed the large audience at Forsythe Middle School last night during a wonderful performance. The large audience didn't seem to make them nervous, and their voices blended nicely together as they sang with confidence. They even got a standing ovation at the end! Yesterday, 5 of our amazing 5th graders came to Eastern Michigan University to perform, demonstrate music activities, and give pointers to the college students on playing the ukulele. They also had a discussion with these future educators. They represented the Thurston students well, and the EMU students loved it!
We have a jar in the music room called "The Jam Jar." This is a place where the 5th graders can put suggestions for songs to do in the music room. Ms. Rothfeld previews them to make sure they are appropriate for school, and then has been creating activities to go with them. Depending on the piece of music, we may play it on ukuleles, figure out the meter or the tonality, watch a cover video of it, and more! Here is one piece we learned about. We learned some interesting facts about the singer, Jaden Smith, too. Can you figure out if it is in duple or triple meter?
This year, the 5th grade performed at the annual OHMHA Fall Festival. About twenty 5th graders were able to make it and sang several songs we have been working on both this year and last! The rain stopped, the clouds cleared, and the sun came out. It was a great day for performing outside!
We had our first choir practice on Tuesday and it was AWESOME! There are about 40 5th graders that have joined the 5th grade choir, and at our first practice the sound of their singing filled the room with amazing melodies and harmonies. Every Tuesday from 11:39-12:03 (their lunch recess), we have practice. We begin with about 5 minutes of warm-ups and then we dive into the music. This year we have a VERY exciting performance coming up in March. (Details to follow soon....) Here is one of the songs we are working on. It's called Yonder Come Day.
