Here are the first three chords we learn in music class, C7, C, and F.
Thurston has such amazing families! In 2015, I decided that I wanted to teach ukulele to the Thurston students. After speaking with Ms. York, I started a GoFundMe page. Whatever money was not raised by Thurston families was going to be covered by the PTO. Thanks to many generous Thurston families, friends, and community members, it only took 4 days for the 30 ukuleles I wanted to be completely funded!!! Thurston owns 30 Kala KA-15S Soprano Ukuleles. At this point, grades 2 through 5 learn to play the ukulele. The younger students have also played a bit--A few times in some of the younger classes, I let them strum the strings while I change chords. We got to see and do a meet-and-greet with Jake Shimabukuro this year. His concert was amazing, and then he answered questions and talked with us for a while. Here is a video of him playing a song for just Thurston students, and another video of his amazing ukulele playing!
Thanks to many generous Thurston families, friends, and community members, Thurston now owns 30 Kala KA-15S Soprano Ukuleles. I will begin teaching the 5th graders how to play these instruments. As the year progresses, I hope to introduce these instruments to some of the younger grades as well. I will continue to update this website with ukulele information, music, and videos. |
