When you can play the first two and last two lines of Star Wars, you will receive your black belt! This belt is extra special, as this is the one song you cannot test for by sending Ms. Rothfeld a video. You will test in front of the other students, so we can clap and celebrate your success with you. Once you get your black belt, your name goes on the "Recorder Hall of Fame" outside the music room door, and you get a certificate!
The green belt song choices are the Canoe Song or Old MacDonald Had a Farm. Both of these songs are below, with videos of students demonstrating the fingerings for the songs. Skin and Bones (or Starlight) is the orange belt. Below is the music to Skin and Bones, as well as a student playing and demonstrating how to finger the notes. Our yellow belt is either Mary Had a Little Lamb OR the theme from The Nutcracker March. To earn the yellow belt, the 4th graders can either test in class or send me a video. The email address is in their recorder folders, or you can search for it on the Thurston website. Below is the music to Mary Had a Little Lamb, as well as a video of a student playing the song. The white belt is for those that are able to play Hot Cross Buns OR Claire de Lune. Make sure to have your left hand on top, blow softly, and cover up the holes completely!
The 4th graders now have their recorders! We have been working on B-A-G songs and have begun testing. At Thurston, we do a program called Recorder Karate. With this program, the students earn "belts," (or pieces of yarn) that they can put on their recorders for songs that they test for. Our belt list is:
White Belt: Hot Cross Buns OR Claire de Lune Yellow Belt: Mary Had a Little Lamb OR The Nutcracker Theme Orange Belt: Skin and Bones OR Starlight Green Belt: Canoe Song OR Old McDonald Purple Belt: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star (Melody or Harmony) Blue Belt: Yankee Doodle OR Aura Lee Red Belt: Lightly Row OR Ally Bally Brown Belt: Ode to Joy (Regular or Challenge) Black Belt: Star Wars Theme Song Multicolored Belt: Don Gato Silver Belt: Hedwig's Theme (from Harry Potter) Gold Belt: Indiana Jones Theme Song Thurston Belt: The Thurston Song |
