Your children may have been coming home talking about “audiating” music. Audiation is to music as thinking is to language. Audiation takes a child from imitating musical sounds around them, to engaging in, understanding, and creating musical sounds. A student who audiates music is giving meaning to music. In other words, it is “thinking music with meaning.”
Tonal and rhythmic patterns are an important part of audiation development. If you happen to stop by in a preschool music class (you are more than welcome to come visit us!), you will see a lot of pattern instruction. Similar to learning vocabulary of a language, pattern instruction is our “music vocabulary.” Pattern instruction is tailored to each student’s ability to encourage musical growth. I have been very impressed with the preschool students’ ability to echo and create both tonal and rhythm patterns this year!
