Aretha Franklin was born in 1942. She died on August 16, 2018 in Detroit, MI. Considered the Queen of Soul, her music touched so many people, with its emotion, lyrics, and musical quality. Having a powerful voice, amazing piano skills, her ear, and her vocal flexibility were just a few reasons that many people consider her one of the giants of soul music, rock and roll, and American pop. She was very involved in the struggle for civil rights and women's rights. She participated in both of these causes by giving money, writing music about them, and performing at benefits and protests. Aretha Franklin was given many award throughout her life including being the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
