Each 3rd grade class took the chant, "The Witch of Willoby Wood" and created a melody to go with it. All three classes decided that the chant would sound best in minor, and then decided how they thought it should be sung. Here are the words and the recordings of the three 3rd grade classes. They did a pretty nice job, didn't they? Since they are able to identify, create, and improvise in minor, it was a very easy task for them. We will be doing more complicated composition projects throughout the year. One such project later on will be writing poetry, and coming up with a melody for it--creating original songs. These are definitely things that they can also be doing at home. Some of them have told me that they already do this! They are a very capable group of musicians!
This year, the 3rd grade was invited to perform at the annual OHMHA Fall Festival. There were over thirty-five 3rd graders that were able to make it! The rain stopped, the clouds cleared, and the sun came out--it was a perfect day for an outside performance. The 3rd graders sounded great and even got to have some apple cider and donuts while at the Festival.
