Below is the song "Old Joe Clark." Since you know it so well, after you sing it, try to make up a few verses of your own. They can be as silly as you'd like. Try to make the end of the second and fourth line rhyme, but as you can see with this song, they don't always rhyme, so your verses don't have to either. I'd love to hear your new verses. Feel free to share your ideas below!
Here's a great rhyming song. If your family members don't know it, teach it to them. You can be the leader, they can echo you. Once you go through the verses below, see how many new ones you can create. You could even draw pictures of your rhymes and then sing them. What are some create rhymes you can think of? Let me know in the comments.
In 3rd grade one of the folk dances we did this year was called Sashay the Donut. We had to be careful in the music room to be aware of our surroundings. A sashay is like a sideways gallop, and the students thought that the reason it was Sashay the Donut was because with the two circles that we make in the dance, it looks like a donut. Try this dance at home. Even though you don't have a full class to do it, see if you can adjust to make it work. Was it harder to do with less people? Did you have enough room to sashay? Did you try it inside your house or outside? Let me know how it goes in the comment section! Here is a Music BINGO game created by my friend Jennifer Bailey, another music teacher in Michigan. See how many of these things you can do while at home. Hint: Some of these items can be found on the Videos page right here on Ms. Rothfeld's music website.
During the past few music classes, we've been working on the Turkey Tango. In the song it talks about Fred Astaire. The 3rd graders got to learn about him. We watched some videos and talked about who he was. Below is the Turkey Tango and the melody to sing with. Also, below are two videos of Fred Astaire. The first video is of his amazing dancing. The second video is a video of how one of the scenes was created--with a camera trick.
Each 3rd grade class took the chant, "The Witch of Willoby Wood" and created a melody to go with it. All three classes decided that the chant would sound best in minor, and then decided how they thought it should be sung. Here are the words and the recordings of the three 3rd grade classes. They did a pretty nice job, didn't they? Since they are able to identify, create, and improvise in minor, it was a very easy task for them. We will be doing more complicated composition projects throughout the year. One such project later on will be writing poetry, and coming up with a melody for it--creating original songs. These are definitely things that they can also be doing at home. Some of them have told me that they already do this! They are a very capable group of musicians!
This year, the 3rd grade was invited to perform at the annual OHMHA Fall Festival. There were over thirty-five 3rd graders that were able to make it! The rain stopped, the clouds cleared, and the sun came out--it was a perfect day for an outside performance. The 3rd graders sounded great and even got to have some apple cider and donuts while at the Festival.
